I get out of work. I’ve got the car for the day. My wife took the bus instead of me, but I’ll pick her up from work when she gets out.
The reason for the switcharoo is because I have some work to do after work. For my church, I am responsible for picking up the supplies for Communion. We have a Lord’s Supper once a month, and this weekend, we come together, eat gluten-free bread, and drink grape juice.
I go to H-E-B and order a German Rye loaf from the bakery. It has to be unsliced so the pastor can pick it up and break it.
I grab a shopping cart, pick up several bottles of grape juice, and then go to the bread aisle, where I grab five loaves of vacuum-sealed gluten-free bread.
On Friday, I will pick up the German Rye loaf. I will fill the metalware juice trays with 750 tiny plastic cups. I will score the German Rye loaf with a Japanese bread knife on Saturday. Then, I will cut 750 pieces of communion with an electric knife, bag them, and save the crust.
“Gophers” are the flunkies that “go for” whatever the leader asks. It’s interesting being Jesus’s gopher. It’s fun, but it’s serious. It’s always more than what you bargained for, but you’re never set up for failure. It’s humbling, but it’s also kind of cool. I don’t know whether to keep my head down or chin up, but I try to run these errands with a smile.
I feel anxious before I run these errands. I think it’s because I worry that I won’t be able to find what I’m looking for. But when I run these errands, I know I’ve found what I’ve always sought.
Purpose.
