In grad school, I asked the millennials in my cohort, “Since we will likely not have both, which will you choose: a house or retirement?”
Many chose the house. I did too. Absolute retirement isn’t appealing to me.
I’m a writing tutor now, which I regularly discuss on my blog. I work part-time, and I serve others with most of the free time I have. I serve my neighborhood association, church, blood bank, community college radio station, open mic nights, and homeless services. If not, I am creating something, reading a book, exercising, spending time with family and friends, cooking, etc. This is ideal for me. I wish I could do it forever.
In the past year, I’ve learned what living a rich and fulfilling life entails: having a healthy disposition toward work and getting things done.
I might find out if I’ve landed a full-time job this week. If so, I will throttle my time and energy to serve others. But, one day, when I retire, my plan is simple.
Dom’s Retirement Vision
1) Tutor students in writing on a part-time basis.
2) Care for my health.
3) Use the rest of my time for others.
How do I plan on fulfilling this vision? I’m about to find out.
