Ecc 1:12-14: I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Reading, Writing, and Civics

We have a duty to read. This much is true. Reading is a deontological ethic. We are responsible for learning about the world and its people through literacy.

In the same sense, reading is like voting. We have a responsibility—a duty—to be informed about candidates and issues and to cast our votes.

So if reading is like voting, writing is like volunteering, running for office, and participating in civics.

This means that it is the duty of leaders to be informed, and it is the duty of writers to do their reading.
